—  About

Hey y’all, I’m Anna Bennett

I am a multidisciplinary performance artist who uses video, dance, physical theater and comedy to create theatrical experiences for folks who don’t think they “get” performance art, so they can see parts of themselves reflected and examined through familiar tropes. I use my generic white girl face to transform myself into many characters, and because I’m a broad broad with lots of skills, my performances featured cross-media elements, like cinematic video mixed with improvised paper airplane dancing. My theatrical pieces take devious delight in the postmodern sandbox that is the convergence of popular culture and my own multi-hyphenate tendencies.

Bennett is a Chicago-based improviser, journalist, choreographer, visual artist, musician, actor, and general creative type. Performance works include the multimedia one-woman show “Confessions of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl,” for which she won Best Actress at the Pittsburgh Fringe Festival; the collaborative installation/dance performance “Roommates” in conjunction with Liv Jensen at Living Arts of Tulsa; “Proximity,” a dance collaboration with experimental composer and musician Matt Magerkurth; the post-apocalyptic improvised gameshow “Triage,” which was performed at Pittsburgh Fringe Festival and Philadelphia Fringe Festival in September in 2017. Her latest piece, “Species Dea,” a solo work incorporating performance and projection, premiered at the 2019 New Genre festival at Living Arts. Bennett has also choreographed and performed with Portico Dance Theatre, most recently for the 2018 production of “WO,” for which she also designed projections.
